PREMIERS JOURS DE PRINTEMPS
J’entendais mille voix mêlées,
À demi couché dans un bois
Dans cette humeur où des pensées
De bonheur font naître l’effroi.
La Nature à son bel ouvrage
Liait l’âme qui coule en moi ;
Et mon cœur déplorait l’outrage
De ce que l’homme a fait de soi.
Les pervenches sous la ramure
Couraient parmi les primevères ;
Oh oui, chaque fleur, j’en suis sûr,
Aime l’air qui la désaltère.
Les oiseaux jouaient, sautillant,
Leurs pensées je ne saurais dire :
— Mais dans leur moindre mouvement
Passait un frisson de plaisir.
Les branches ouvraient à la brise
Leurs bourgeons pour mieux la saisir,
Et je dois croire, quoi qu’on dise,
Qu’il y avait là du plaisir.
Si le ciel me donne le gage
Que la Nature a fait ce choix,
Ai-je tort de pleurer l’outrage
De ce que l’homme a fait de soi ?

LINES WRITTEN IN EARLY SPRING
I heard a thousand blended notes,
While in a grove I sat reclined,
In that sweet mood when pleasant thoughts
Bring sad thoughts to the mind.
To her fair works did Nature link
The human soul that through me ran ;
And much it grieved my heart to think
What man has made of man.
Through primrose tufts, in that green bower,
The periwinkle trailed its wreaths;
And ’tis my faith that every flower
Enjoys the air it breathes.
The birds around me hopped and played,
Their thoughts I cannot measure :
— But the least motion which they made,
It seemed a thrill of pleasure.
The budding twigs spread out their fan,
To catch the breezy air;
And I must think, do all I can,
That there was pleasure there.
If this belief from heaven be sent,
If such be Nature ‘s holy plan,
Have I no reason to lament
What man has made of man ?
