Moving House
Look: the base rooms of what was then
Our home fill with unimpeded,
Unforeseen light. Books from shelves,
Bulbs from ceilings, having been
Lowered and crated, will, I suppose,
Have joined all that the house has shed,
In hollow vans. The house and we,
Without, simplified, curtainless.
The light, as if we were not there,
Brims and possesses, while the house
Trembles with silence everywhere.
What is this light? This lightness? We
Observe the air no presence fills,
And touch the sunlight on the sills.

exquise miniature.

Magpie
The magpie at the door of the may
swivelling its purposeful head
above the flattened vista
boding no good.
It dazzles with white and black
(only the foliage knows
the lacquered blue and green,
the tail for ruddering the winds).
Set in the thick of the leaves,
of the circle studded with flowers,
polished by binoculars,
an exquisite miniature.

Tes yeux couleur de terre.
Mes yeux, soleil et ciel
Reflets à mi-chemin
Le monde ayant cessé.
Ni toi ni moi n’existe
Mais nous serons un jour:
Sommes ailleurs, ici
Mystère au fond du qui.
En l’autre nous voyons
La voie au loin où le
Possible nous appelle:
Un corps pour la demeure
Prochaine et qui attend
Dans l’âme sa prison.

We, looking, grey eyes into brown,
Reflecting in a stopped world,
See that it is not you and I,
That one is not oneself, alone.
I is not I, you are not you,
Though who are does not appear;
Our other selves are elsewhere, here,
Within this mystery of who,
Begin is all we ever do,
Seeking the way, and open to
The summoms of the possible.
In each, beyond, we see a home,
A body for the world to come,
Imprisoned in the fallen soul.

Dans le royaume c’est toujours maintenant.
Un écureuil coule vers la cime d’un chêne.

In the kingdom it is always now.
A squirrel flows up the oak.

Les couleurs s’annulent.
Vos pierres de gué
Devinent un chemin
Sur le blanc aveugle
Au ras des rives.
Le vide du puits
Avale les sons.
Bruissent les mots
Parmi les pierres.
Ils cherchent le noir
Fluide et frais
De l’eau souterraine.
Sur les bords du lac
Expire le souffle
Du vent qui passe.
Vous vacillez
Dans l’infini
De la lumière
Qui dissipe la voie.
Que vos paroles
Sombrent en tremblant
Dans la calme lueur,
Pour resurgir
Ailleurs, accomplies!

A blanching of sight.
Your stepping stones
Extend a path
Across the depth
Of brimming white.
The hollow well
Absorbs the words.
Sounds as they fall
Resound in the shaft.
They seek the cool
And liquid dark
Of water in earth.
The lakeside laps
With the dying breaths
Of the passing wind.
The infinite
Before within
Whose light you falter,
Disperses the way.
May the words you say
Tremble and sink
Through the glowing quiet,
To rise elsewhere
And be heard as they are.

Vers La Lance
Les ombres des nuages
Qui maneuvrent là-haut
Rôdent sur les versants,
Eteignent tour à tour
Les arbres, les maisons.
Le noir de la lumière
Creuse des puits profonds
Dans la terre surprise,
Et libère en partant
D’éclatantes collines.

Towards La Lance
The clouds process.
Their shadows range
the slopes at will,
dousing each tree
and house in turn.
The dark of light
sinks in the earth,
hollowing deep.
Its going leaves
luminous hills.

Ecouter
Il semble
que les roseaux sur l’eau
et dans le ciel
les fragiles peupliers
aient appelé de loin
dans le silence secret des choses
le vent
qui leur donne ces voix.

Listening
Reeds in the lake, in the air
fragilities of poplars, seem
to have called, in the secret silence of things,
the wind from afar to give them speech.

J’entends
s’ouvrir une porte:
tu remplis l’espace,
tes yeux, ta bouche,
ton corps, rayonnant
du sourire
de la Lumière.

Behind one a door
opens, and as
she fills the room
her small face and
whole
body
smile with Light

Les chérubins
L’épée qu’ils brandissent, c’est la Loi.
Elle éblouit: on veut
Obéir, être bon – entrer. On s’approche,
On brûle.

Cherubim
The sword they wield is the Law.
It dazzles; we want
To obey, to be good. To enter.
We draw near, and burn.

Dans le jardin
Penchée vers la terre
tu nommes les plantes
avec des doigts qui savent.

In the Garden
Bending to the earth
you name each plant
with fingers that know.
